Julie Barnes Dahl
Julie works across multiple media, with tattooing as her primary practice. Alongside this, she develops her work through drawing, sculpture, printmaking, and analog photography. She draws inspiration from the immediate and familiar surroundings, where relationships and nature form the foundation. Her creative process often revolves around iterations, where a motif is repeated, shifted, and deconstructed.
Monotypes – When repetitions create dreams
In the series of monotype prints, Julie takes her starting point from the squared mathematics notebook. Here, the grid functions as a set of rules for systematics and repetition, but the repetitions are used to open a freer, more dreamlike space. The strict pattern, etched into the copper plate, contrasts with the deep and soft colors of the applied printing ink, creating a tension between the rigid and the lively.
